15 Ways to Save Money on a Cross-Country Move
Each tip below includes the realistic savings amount. Combined, these tactics can reduce the total cost of a cross-country move by 40-60% compared to the typical approach.
Move off-peak (Jan-March or Oct-Nov)
Save 30-40%The single biggest lever. January through March rates are 30-40% below the summer peak. October and November are nearly as good. On a $4,000 move, that is $1,200-$1,600 in savings for simply choosing the right month.
Move mid-week, mid-month
Save 10-20%Tuesday through Thursday moves cost 15-25% less than weekend moves for truck rentals. The 10th-20th of any month costs 10-20% less than end-of-month (when leases expire and moving companies are overwhelmed).
Book 6-8 weeks ahead
Save 10-15%Last-minute bookings in any season are more expensive because operators charge a scarcity premium. Booking 6-8 weeks ahead locks in better rates and ensures your preferred truck size or container is available.
Get 3+ binding written quotes
Save 15-30%Competition among movers or container companies on the same route is fierce. Getting three binding written quotes and using them to negotiate saves 15-30% vs accepting the first quote you receive. Always request binding estimates, not non-binding.
Source free moving boxes
Save $100-$300Liquor stores (Monday-Wednesday mornings), Office Depot and Staples after delivery days, apartment building dumpster areas after the 1st of the month, Facebook Marketplace (search 'free moving boxes'), and the U-Haul Box Exchange. A 2BR apartment needs 40-60 boxes; buying them at $2-$5 each costs $80-$300.
Declutter aggressively before booking
Save $100-$500Every 100 lbs you eliminate from your load reduces your cost. Full-service movers charge by weight; freight trailer (U-Pack) charges by linear foot. Donating or selling furniture and clothes before getting quotes means you book the right truck size (or fewer linear feet) from the start.
Sell furniture you would replace anyway
Save $300-$1,500For inexpensive furniture (under $500 replacement cost), selling before the move and replacing at the destination is almost always cheaper than shipping. See the detailed math on our sell-and-replace guide.
Use USPS Media Mail for books
Save $50-$200Books, CDs, and DVDs qualify for USPS Media Mail at $3-$8 per box. A box of 20 paperbacks costs $4 to ship versus $30 via UPS Ground. If you have 5-10 boxes of books, this saves $120-$260.
DIY-load a container with day labor
Save $1,000-$2,000Rent a PODS or U-Pack container and hire TaskRabbit or Dolly labor at $80-$150/hr per pair for 4-6 hours at each end. Total labor cost: $320-$900. Compare to full-service van lines at $6,000-$9,000 for the same 2BR move. The hybrid option saves $1,500-$2,500 with no driving required.
Skip moving insurance you do not need
Save $100-$400If you are doing a DIY move with inexpensive furniture and your renter's or homeowner's insurance covers items in transit (check your policy), you may not need to buy additional moving insurance. Full-service movers must offer Released Value free (though the coverage is only $0.60/lb and nearly worthless for electronics).
Refuse non-binding estimates
Save Unpredictable upchargesNon-binding estimates from full-service movers are not price guarantees. The final bill can be substantially higher. Always demand a binding written estimate that locks in the price. If a mover refuses to provide a binding estimate, that is a red flag for bait-and-switch pricing.
Use a credit card with rental insurance
Save $100-$225Some premium credit cards include rental vehicle insurance for cars. Check whether your card covers moving trucks (most do not, but some Chase and Amex cards have broader coverage). If it qualifies, you can skip U-Haul SafeMove at $14-$30/day and save $100-$225 for a 7-10 day rental.
Use Costco/Sam's fuel membership for truck fuel
Save $40-$100A 26ft truck at 8 MPG uses 250 gallons over 2,000 miles. Costco and Sam's Club typically sell fuel at $0.10-$0.20 below street price. That is $25-$50 in savings, and if you are already a member, fuel stops at Costco on the route add up.
Move during employer relocation assistance
Save $2,000-$10,000+If your move is job-related, ask your new employer about relocation assistance before accepting the offer. Even companies that do not advertise relocation packages sometimes offer a lump sum ($2,000-$5,000) or a full-service move for competitive hires. Negotiate this as part of your offer if you have leverage.
Military and AAA discounts
Save 10-15%Active-duty military receive 10% discounts at PODS, U-Haul, Penske, and most major moving companies. AAA members get 10-15% off U-Haul truck rentals and some container companies. AARP members have similar discounts with some full-service van lines. Always ask before paying.
The Extreme Budget Moves (Rarely Used, But Real)
- Drive-away car services: Some companies need vehicles driven cross-country and pay someone to drive them. You provide the driving, they provide the car and sometimes the fuel. Search "driveaway car delivery" for current opportunities.
- Freight broker platforms: Sites like uShip allow you to post a load and get bids from freight drivers with empty return-trip capacity. Sometimes significantly cheaper than standard container rates for the right route and timing.
- Sublet arbitrage: Some people moving cross-country post their apartment as a sublet and live in the new city temporarily until they find permanent housing, eliminating the cost of overlapping rent during the transition.
