Sell Everything and Buy New: The Cheapest Cross-Country Move
For renters moving 1,000+ miles with IKEA-grade furniture, selling everything and buying at the destination is almost always cheaper than shipping. Here is the actual math.
The 50% Rule
If the cost to ship an item cross-country exceeds 50% of its current replacement value, sell it and buy new at the destination. A $400 IKEA couch costs $300-$500 to ship. Sell it for $150, replace it for $400 at the destination. Net cost: $250 vs $400 to ship. The math heavily favors selling for inexpensive furniture and shipping for quality pieces.

Best for clearing everything at once. Price low (people are there for deals). Move out the week after.
