What this directory is, and what it is not
Two federal filings separate a real interstate mover from an outfit that should not be touching your furniture. The first is the USDOT number, which every interstate carrier must hold. The second is household goods operating authority, a separate grant that covers moving a household for hire across state lines. This directory is the intersection: 6,402 companies whose census record is active, interstate and for hire, who list household goods among the cargo they carry, and who also appear in the federal operating authority files with active household goods authority.
The wider census is much larger. 49,862 active interstate for hire carriers list household goods on their MCS-150 form, which is 8 times the number that hold the authority to move one. Listing a cargo type is a tick box on a form. Holding the authority is a separate application with insurance and bond requirements attached.
None of this is a recommendation. FMCSA does not vet, approve or rate the companies in its census, and neither do we. Registration tells you a company exists on the federal record and is allowed to do the work. It tells you nothing about whether it will show up on time or hold your goods hostage at the far end. Counts are companies whose physical address is in that state. A mover registered in one state can and does move households nationwide. The largest single fleet on the whole file is Schneider National Carriers INC of Green Bay, WI, at 9,866 power units. The oldest USDOT record in the directory dates to 1974.

Complaint history is not published here
FMCSA records household goods complaints in the National Consumer Complaint Database. That database has no bulk or export route open to the public, so no complaint counts appear on this site. What a full service interstate move costs
A full service van line is the most expensive of the eight methods this site ranks. These are our national cost bands for a two bedroom home, off peak, from cost by distance. Peak season, June through August, adds 30 to 40 percent.

Where this data comes from

Every company on these pages is registered with FMCSA. Registration is a filing requirement, not an endorsement, a licence to a standard, an approval, or a quality check by FMCSA or by this site. Fleet counts, driver counts and mileage are self reported by the carrier on form MCS-150 and are only as current as its last filing. Figures are reproduced as the federal files recorded them on the snapshot dates above and may have changed since.
Of the 6,402 companies in the dataset, 6,276 have a record page and 126 appear only as rows on their state page, either because the federal files carry too little on them to say anything useful or because an unrescinded out of service order is recorded against the USDOT number.
